Monsters

The word monster is a survivor’s term, not a scientific classification.

Some threats are mana constructs. Others are altered animals, folkloric aberrations, dungeon-born entities, or organisms whose origins remain unknown. Early names are often provisional, based on what frightened witnesses saw long enough to describe.

Humanity does not begin this story with a bestiary. Every useful fact has to be earned through observation, survival, testing, and—when nothing else works—combat.

Record Principles

  • Behavior matters more than appearance.
  • A System designation is evidence, not a complete explanation.
  • Threat ratings depend on terrain, numbers, preparation, and available weapons.
  • “Unknown” is preferable to an unsupported conclusion.
  • Field names and scientific classifications may change as evidence improves.
  • Development notes must not be treated as character knowledge until discovered on the page.

These entries may include both confirmed manuscript facts and planned material. When the two differ, the current manuscript and continuity ledgers control.

Field Doctrine

Observe first. Record what happened, not what should have happened. Separate a creature’s demonstrated capabilities from theories about its origin. If a rule works once, treat it as a lead. If it works repeatedly, begin treating it as doctrine.

The monsters are changing.

Humanity’s records must change with them.
