Skinwalker

DEVELOPMENT RECORD

The Skinwalker is a planned threat and has not appeared in the Book 1 manuscript. The capabilities, materials, and doctrine below describe intended future canon, not current character knowledge.

Scientific Classification Homo Lupus Maledictus (temporary)

Common Name Skinwalker

Threat Rating Extreme (Early Generation Boss)

Planned Level 10

Description

Standing between eight and nine feet tall, the Skinwalker possesses a grotesquely elongated humanoid body whose proportions seem subtly wrong. Its arms hang almost to its knees, ending in oversized hands tipped with long black claws capable of tearing through ballistic fabric.

Its visible skin ranges from pale gray to bruised purple, stretched tightly over a lean but unnaturally powerful frame. Veins of faint black discoloration snake beneath the surface as though something foreign flows through its body.

The creature's head resembles the decayed skull of a wolf still partially wrapped in dried flesh. Matted black fur extends from the skull down across the shoulders, upper back, and portions of the chest, giving the unsettling impression that the wolf is being worn as a living mantle rather than belonging to the creature itself.

Its eyes are almost completely black.

Only a tiny crimson point burns at the center of each pupil.

Those who survive prolonged eye contact often report nightmares afterward.

Behavior

Unlike Canis Draco, the Skinwalker does not rush immediately into combat.

It watches.

It circles.

It studies.

It appears capable of recognizing fear and intentionally exploiting hesitation before attacking.

It frequently separates individuals from groups before committing to a kill.

Unlike most known constructs, it demonstrates clear tactical awareness.

Primary Attacks

Claws

Long foreclaws capable of ripping through modern ballistic vests with repeated strikes.

Bite

Extremely powerful jaws designed to crush bone and maintain a prolonged grip.

Special Ability

Fear Howl

The Skinwalker emits a piercing, unnatural howl that resonates far beyond normal hearing.

Witnesses describe an immediate sensation of overwhelming dread followed by accelerated heartbeat, tunnel vision, trembling, and an almost irresistible urge to flee.

The effect appears strongest on individuals already experiencing elevated stress.

Current theory suggests the howl does not generate fear.

It amplifies fear that already exists.

Intelligence

Estimated higher than Generation I predators.

Displays ambush tactics.

Uses terrain.

May intentionally retreat to lure prey.

Planned behavior includes recognizing firearms and avoiding concentrated fire.

Weaknesses

Unknown.

Repeated rifle fire appears capable of slowing the creature but not reliably stopping it.

Planned field doctrine:

Avoid solitary engagement.

Origin Theory

Unlike Generation I predators believed to form from unstable concentrations of ambient mana around successful biological templates, the Skinwalker appears fundamentally different.

Preliminary hypothesis:

The construct forms when a large concentration of mana stabilizes around an exceptionally powerful emotional imprint left by a dying human.

Hatred.

Vengeance.

Obsession.

The resulting construct is not the deceased individual.

Nor is it a ghost.

Rather, it is a mana construct whose behavioral patterns have been partially shaped by the residual emotional imprint that served as its stabilization catalyst.

Classification

remains under review.

Primary Drop

Mantle of the Skinwalker

The fur and upper torso don't dissolve.

The wolf pelt remains intact.

Not because it's fur...

Because it's the most stable mana structure in the construct.

Initially it looks like a torn wolf hide.

Later...

Engineers discover it can be integrated into armor.

Crafted Item

Skinwalker Vest

Type: Medium Armor

Appearance: Modern ballistic vest reinforced with the Skinwalker mantle.

Characteristics:

  • Significantly reduces damage from slashing attacks.
  • Excellent resistance against claws and bites.
  • Lightweight compared to steel plate.
  • Retains flexibility.
  • Does not stop bullets better than modern armor.
  • Fire still penetrates normally.

This preserves the setting’s physics rule: resistance to one damage type does not provide universal protection. Fire remains effective.
