Description

The Canis Draco is a quadrupedal mana construct whose silhouette resembles an unsettling mixture of a monitor lizard and a wild canine.

Its body is long and muscular, built low to the ground for speed rather than endurance. The forelimbs are noticeably stronger than the hind legs, allowing it to lunge with explosive force over short distances.

Its hide appears to be made of overlapping dark scales rather than skin. Under low light those scales seem almost metallic, reflecting brief flashes from headlights or emergency lights before disappearing back into the darkness.

The head is narrow and wedge-shaped, with a jaw capable of opening far wider than any natural canine. Rows of uneven teeth fill its mouth, each one resembling chipped obsidian rather than bone.

Its eyes contain no visible pupils.

Only faint amber points that seem to glow when reflecting light.

Its claws are disproportionately large compared to its body.

Each foreclaw measures nearly eight inches long and curves slightly inward, designed less for slashing than for anchoring prey during a bite.

The tail makes up nearly half of its total length, acting as a counterbalance during sudden changes in direction.

Despite its size...

It moves with almost unnatural silence.

Behavior

The Canis Draco is an ambush predator.

It rarely chases prey over long distances.

Instead it observes, closes the distance rapidly, and commits to a single overwhelming attack.

Its preferred target is the neck or upper torso.

If that fails, it immediately attempts to pin the victim to the ground before delivering repeated bites.

Unlike wolves or dogs, it shows no hesitation.

Once it commits...

It never retreats voluntarily.

Senses

Excellent motion detection.

Moderate vision.

Unknown olfactory capability.

Appears highly sensitive to concentrations of mana.

Known Characteristics

  • Extremely fast over short distances.
  • Surprisingly agile.
  • Exceptional jumping ability.
  • Difficult to detect before attacking.
  • Produces rapid clicking sounds while stalking prey.
  • Nearby electrical lights often flicker seconds before an attack.
  • Shows little reaction to fear or intimidation.

Weaknesses

Limited endurance.

No observed ranged capability.

Can be overwhelmed through coordinated fire.

Highly vulnerable during direct grappling if the jaws can be restrained.

Death

Upon death the body rapidly destabilizes.

The scales fracture first.

Thin lines of pale blue-white light escape through the cracks before the entire body begins dissolving into free mana.

The process takes approximately ten to twenty seconds.

During decomposition the surrounding air fills with the smell of ozone, burnt hair, hot metal, and sulfur.

Almost the entire construct dissipates.

Only highly stabilized components remain.

Known Drops

Greater Foreclaw

The most commonly recovered material.

Harder than steel.

Exceptionally lightweight.

Resistant to heat.

Believed to retain mana naturally.

Primary crafting material during the First Generation.

Notes (Author)

This creature establishes several fundamental rules of the universe:

  • Mana constructs dissolve after death.
  • Only stabilized components remain.
  • Monsters are a renewable source of crafting materials.
  • Level progression is tied to successful survival and combat.
  • Humanity begins classifying monsters scientifically instead of relying on folklore.
