Physical Description

The Wampus Cat is a large feline predator with a tiger-like face and six legs.

Its unusual body structure does not prevent it from moving with the balance, silence, and control of a natural big cat. The additional limbs appear to provide greater traction, stability, and explosive acceleration.

Its fur is completely black. Its exact size, weight, and biological origin have not yet been formally documented.

Behavior

The Wampus Cat behaves like a predator rather than a mindless monster.

Observed behavior includes:

  • stalking from concealment
  • circling prey
  • changing attack angles
  • retreating when continued combat becomes too costly
  • using silence and terrain rather than charging recklessly
  • evaluating threats and responding to injury

It does not remain in combat until death.

The Chapter 39 encounter suggests that System creatures may retain ordinary animal survival instincts. The Wampus Cat attacked, suffered meaningful injuries, and withdrew instead of continuing a losing fight.

Its retreat should not be interpreted as defeat or cowardice.

Vocalizations

The Wampus Cat does not use a conventional roar as a confirmed ability.

Observed or expected vocalizations include:

  • low growls
  • snarls
  • hissing
  • coughing feline sounds
  • low vibrating warnings

When seriously wounded by a penetrating prototype arrow, it released a high, piercing scream that sounded disturbingly similar to a human woman crying out in pain.

This scream is a reaction to injury, not a confirmed Skill.

Skill

Speed Grab

The Wampus Cat compresses its body and crosses a short distance with a burst of unnatural speed.

During the activation, it uses its foremost limbs to seize its target while the remaining legs maintain traction and forward movement.

The Skill may be used to:

  • hook both forelimbs around a target
  • pin or immobilize prey
  • drag a target away from a group
  • disrupt weapons and equipment
  • create an opening for a killing bite or follow-up attack

The movement is fast enough to be difficult to track normally.

Speed Grab is not merely increased running speed. The grab itself is the defining action of the Skill.

Durability and Combat Notes

Conventional firearm rounds were effective at suppressing the Wampus Cat but did not cause immediately visible, serious damage during the confirmed encounter.

Prototype Canis Draco-tipped arrows were able to penetrate and inflict meaningful wounds.

This does not yet prove that the creature is immune or resistant to conventional ammunition. Possible explanations include:

  • unusually durable hide
  • dense muscle and bone
  • poor shot placement during a moving engagement
  • System-enhanced resilience

Further observation is required.

Confirmed Encounter

The Valkyries encountered the Wampus Cat while approaching the updated location of a moving mana spike.

Muffin detected the predator before the human members of the team.

During the encounter:

  • the Wampus Cat stalked and flanked the team
  • conventional gunfire suppressed it
  • an ordinary arrow was less effective than the prototypes
  • a prototype arrow penetrated and caused a human-like scream
  • the creature activated Speed Grab
  • Luna became the primary target of the grab
  • Muffin provided a distraction by throwing a rock
  • the Valkyries forced the creature to release and disengage
  • the Wampus Cat withdrew alive

The team did not kill or capture it.

Consequences of the Encounter

  • The Wampus Cat survived.
  • No drops or recoverable creature materials were obtained.
  • Both prototype arrows remained embedded in the creature and were lost when it withdrew.
  • Luna suffered shallow scratches near her collarbone, bruising, and a torn vest strap, but no serious injury.
  • The encounter delayed the mission and contributed to the team remaining in the field overnight.
  • The Valkyries learned that System creatures may retreat and behave according to survival instincts. Whether the wounded Wampus Cat will remember them remains unknown.

Threat Assessment

The Wampus Cat should be treated as a highly dangerous ambush predator.

Primary risks include:

  • silent approach
  • rapid changes in position
  • attacks from concealment
  • resistance to immediate suppression
  • sudden seizure of an isolated target
  • the ability to disengage and attack again later

Recommended precautions:

  • maintain overlapping fields of fire
  • avoid allowing a team member to become isolated
  • keep ranged and melee coverage active simultaneously
  • monitor trees, brush, and flanking routes
  • preserve specialized ammunition for confirmed openings
  • do not assume the creature has left the area simply because it disappears from sight
  • expect it to retreat when injured rather than fight to the death
