Canon Status

Series character lore.

Luna is an established member of the Valkyries. Her Level, medical role, archery experience, relationship with Muffin, and Skill Field Stabilization have been introduced in Book 1.

Luna is inspired by the author's daughter, Clara, but she is not a literal twelve-year-old placed into the story. Luna is an adult fictional character built from an imagined future version of Clara's appearance, warmth, humor, and early exposure to archery.

Identity

  • Name: Luna
  • Real-world name inspiration: Clara
  • Team: Valkyries
  • Role: Field Medic
  • Secondary role: Archer / Riflewoman
  • Level: 4 at the Chapter 28 self-scan
  • Skill: Field Stabilization
  • Profession: None confirmed
  • Status: Active

Terminology

Luna should be described as a field medic, not simply a medic, physician, nurse, surgeon, or magical healer.

Her job is to reach casualties under dangerous conditions, stop immediate threats to life, stabilize trauma, and keep the injured alive until they can receive advanced treatment.

She can:

  • Control bleeding
  • Pack and dress wounds
  • Apply tourniquets
  • Stabilize fractures
  • Maintain airways
  • Treat shock
  • Perform triage
  • Prepare casualties for evacuation
  • Monitor deterioration

She cannot casually perform surgery, regenerate tissue, diagnose every illness, or replace a properly equipped medical team.

Physical Description

Luna is approximately five feet seven inches tall.

She has:

  • Light-brown hair that was noticeably blonder when she was younger
  • Brown eyes
  • A small number of faint freckles across her cheeks and nose
  • A lean, healthy build
  • An expressive face that naturally appears warm and approachable

Her hair is usually worn in a side braid. The braid begins near one temple and travels across or around the side of her head before falling over one shoulder.

For portraits, downtime, and controlled environments, the braid may remain visible over her shoulder.

During active combat, it should be shortened, pinned, or tucked close enough to her head and gear that an enemy cannot easily grab it.

Luna should look capable without being visually hardened into the same mold as every other soldier. Her warmth is not a weakness that military service removed. It is part of what makes wounded people trust her.

Personality

Luna is sweet, joyful, affectionate, and emotionally generous.

She enjoys making people laugh and is comfortable behaving in ways that are deliberately undignified around people she trusts. Her humor may include:

  • Blaming suspicious smells on someone else
  • Putting cold or unpleasantly scented feet near a teammate
  • Telling embarrassing stories
  • Laughing at bodily functions
  • Maintaining complete innocence after obviously causing trouble

This humor should feel playful rather than crude or malicious.

It also gives Luna a comic voice distinct from Joker. Joker uses danger, improvisation, and deadpan absurdity. Luna's humor is personal, domestic, and mischievous—the kind used by someone who wants the people around her to relax.

She does not make jokes while a casualty needs her full attention.

When someone is hurt, the playful side disappears immediately. Her voice becomes calm, direct, and reassuring. She gives one instruction at a time and remains physically close enough that an injured person never feels abandoned.

Field Temperament

Luna is not fearless.

She is capable of placing another person's immediate needs ahead of her own fear.

Her strongest field qualities are:

  • Emotional steadiness around traumatic injuries
  • Patience with frightened casualties
  • Clear communication
  • Willingness to work in unpleasant conditions
  • Fast transition between warmth and command
  • Determination to keep treating someone after others believe the situation is hopeless

She does not enjoy suffering and should never become emotionally numb merely to prove competence.

Luna carries the human cost of each mission with her. Her joy matters because she understands what despair looks like and refuses to let it become the team's permanent atmosphere.

Medical Role

Luna and Jose occupy comparable field-medicine roles on different teams.

They should share:

  • Trauma-response knowledge
  • Familiarity with field medical supplies
  • Ability to work under fire
  • Practical understanding of evacuation priorities
  • Interest in the System's effect on wounds and recovery

Their styles should differ.

Luna's Approach

Luna builds trust quickly. She explains what she is doing, maintains contact with the casualty, and uses warmth to prevent panic.

Jose's Approach

Jose is more restrained and procedural. His calm comes from discipline, repetition, and focusing on the next necessary action.

Neither approach is superior. Together, they provide a useful medical partnership and can compare how Field Stabilization changes outcomes.

Skill: Field Stabilization

FIELD STABILIZATION

Slows deterioration after traumatic injury.

Established Function

Field Stabilization does not heal a wound directly.

It slows the processes that would otherwise cause a casualty to worsen before treatment or evacuation can be completed.

Depending on later mechanical decisions, this may affect:

  • Blood loss
  • Shock
  • Respiratory decline
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Swelling
  • Secondary tissue damage
  • Complications caused by delayed treatment

The Skill should create time.

It should not create miracles without cost.

Discovery

Luna discovers Field Stabilization during the Chapter 28 self-scan.

She believes it may already have functioned during the power-plant mission while she was trying to keep three people alive. This establishes an important System principle:

A Skill may operate before its user understands that it exists.

Intended Limitations

The exact limits remain unresolved. Likely limitations include:

  • Luna must personally assess or treat the casualty
  • The Skill works best while she remains nearby
  • It slows decline rather than reversing damage
  • Severe injuries still require conventional treatment
  • Multiple casualties divide her concentration or effectiveness
  • Prolonged use causes physical or mental fatigue
  • It cannot indefinitely preserve someone beyond survivable limits

These rules should be discovered through consequences rather than explained all at once.

Future Development

Field Stabilization may eventually evolve toward stronger battlefield support, but Luna should not become a conventional fantasy healer too early.

Possible development paths include:

  • Stabilizing several nearby casualties
  • Extending the effect after she moves away
  • Temporarily suppressing pain or shock
  • Identifying the most immediate threat to a casualty's life
  • Combining the Skill with System-enhanced medical equipment

Direct tissue regeneration, magical restoration, and resurrection are not established.

Archery

Luna's first exposure to archery occurred when she was young. A family acquaintance gave her and several relatives brief instruction with a bow.

The experience was limited, but she enjoyed it enough to continue later.

As a teenager, fictional Luna participated in high-school archery competition. She later gained some hunting experience. This preserves the Book 1 statement:

“Competition in high school. Some hunting afterward.”

Luna is therefore competent with a bow, but she is not introduced as a master archer.

Preferred Bow

Luna is best suited to a modern compound bow because:

  • It matches her contemporary background
  • Adjustable draw weight allows practical progression
  • The let-off assists with controlled aim
  • Sights provide consistency
  • It can accept specialized System-crafted arrows

She can also operate a recurve bow if required, but it should not be her primary weapon without additional training.

Tactical Use

The bow gives Luna:

  • A quiet ranged option
  • Recoverable ammunition
  • Access to specialized arrowheads
  • Reduced dependence on firearm ammunition
  • The ability to remain behind the frontline while supporting casualties

Her medical load limits how much archery equipment she can carry. She should not simultaneously carry an unrealistic quantity of medical supplies, rifle ammunition, arrows, and additional weapons.

The team must decide which equipment fits each mission.

Standard Equipment

Luna's likely field equipment includes:

  • Service rifle
  • Sidearm
  • Individual first-aid equipment
  • Expanded trauma bag
  • Tourniquets and pressure dressings
  • Splinting materials
  • Compact diagnostic tools
  • Radio
  • Compound bow when mission requirements justify it
  • Limited quiver with purpose-selected arrows
  • Muffin, who does not count as authorized equipment

Her gear should appear organized and accessible. Medical supplies needed within seconds must not be buried beneath general equipment.

Visual Design

Luna's visual identity should combine approachability with field competence.

Face and Hair

  • Brown eyes
  • Light-brown or dark-blonde hair
  • Minimal freckles
  • Side braid
  • Warm expression that can become sharply focused

Build

  • Approximately 5'7"
  • Lean and athletic
  • Strong enough to assist with casualty movement
  • Realistic rather than exaggerated

Clothing and Armor

  • Modern military field uniform
  • Tactical vest fitted to her frame
  • Clearly accessible medical pouches
  • Medical identifier that remains visible without dominating the design
  • Gloves suitable for fieldwork
  • Bow equipment positioned without interfering with her trauma bag

Portrait Direction

Luna should not be presented as a grim, generic female soldier.

The ideal portrait shows:

  • A relaxed but ready stance
  • A compound bow held safely rather than actively drawn
  • A visible trauma bag or medical pouch
  • The side braid clearly readable
  • A restrained smile suggesting warmth and humor
  • Muffin nearby or riding on her pack in a secondary image

She should look like someone frightened civilians would willingly follow and wounded soldiers would trust.

Relationships

Sophia

Sophia is Luna's team leader.

Luna respects her command but is comfortable enough to tease her when the team is safe. Sophia relies on Luna to judge whether an injured person can continue or must be evacuated.

Reyes

Reyes is the Queen.

Luna is one of the people most willing to laugh at the story behind that title, particularly because she was present for the bar fight involving Queen Latifah.

Their friendship allows Luna to challenge Reyes without turning every disagreement into a contest of authority.

Muffin

Muffin frequently rides on Luna's pack.

Luna has learned to continue moving when Muffin climbs onto her, steals from an open pouch, or uses her as transportation without warning.

Luna should become one of the first characters to recognize that Muffin understands spoken language at a level far beyond normal animal behavior.

Jose

Jose is Luna's closest professional counterpart.

Their shared medical responsibilities create immediate trust, practical disagreements, and opportunities to test Field Stabilization under controlled conditions.

Gabriel

Luna takes Gabriel's analytical questions seriously because careful documentation may improve casualty survival.

She is also willing to tell him when observation has become avoidance and when a patient needs reassurance rather than another hypothesis.

Narrative Voice

Luna's dialogue should be:

  • Warm
  • Direct during emergencies
  • Playful during downtime
  • Occasionally embarrassing
  • Less sarcastic than Reyes
  • Less absurd than Joker
  • More emotionally open than Sophia

She may tell a short personal story or make an undignified joke where Joker would deliver a one-line provocation.

Her humor should make the team feel like people who had families and ordinary lives before the apocalypse.

Protected Character Constraint

Luna cannot die.

She may be injured, separated from the team, overwhelmed by casualties, or forced to make painful medical decisions. The story may place her in genuine danger, but she must survive the series.

This is an authorial constraint rather than in-world invulnerability.

Her protection must never prevent the reader from believing that she can fail to save someone else.

Continuity Obligations

  • Use field medic consistently for Luna's role. Do not describe her as a combat medic.
  • Luna is Level 4 when she performs the Chapter 28 self-scan.
  • Field Stabilization is a Skill, not a Profession.
  • She may have used Field Stabilization before discovering it.
  • She has enough archery experience to be competent, but not enough to begin as an elite archer.
  • Her compound bow must not appear before the requested supplies reach Area 77.
  • Muffin can ride on Luna's pack without disrupting her movement.
  • Luna's medical load must remain physically plausible.
  • Luna's fictional adult history expands upon Clara's childhood experience; the two should not be treated as identical biographies.

Undecided

  • Luna's surname
  • Exact age
  • Rank
  • Military unit and pre-apocalypse assignment
  • Formal medical certifications
  • Dominant hand
  • Preferred compound-bow draw weight
  • Whether she allocates future Aspect Points toward Dexterity, Perception, Constitution, or Willpower
  • Field Stabilization's range and maximum duration
  • Whether the Skill can affect multiple casualties
  • Her later Skill evolution
  • The severity and timing of any major injury

Narrative Purpose

Luna represents care that remains practical under catastrophic conditions.

She does not preserve humanity through speeches. She preserves it by kneeling beside someone in blood and debris, controlling the bleeding, making them breathe, and refusing to let their last moments be spent alone.

Her joy is equally important.

The apocalypse can make people harder. Luna demonstrates that strength can also mean remaining sweet, playful, and capable of laughter after seeing exactly how fragile a human body is.
