- Title: Guardian
- Skill: Shark Bite
- Status: Active
Background
Duke is a large black Cane Corso discovered inside the Broward County Animal Care shelter after the first Canis Draco hunt.
When the team entered the shelter, they found signs of an extended fight. The lobby had been destroyed, Canis Draco claws remained among the debris, and several creatures had already been killed.
Duke was still fighting.
He had remained inside the shelter while dogs and cats were trapped without food or water. Whether he stayed to protect them, refused to abandon the shelter, or simply considered the building his territory remains unknown.
When Joker, Clive, and Darius found him, Duke killed a Canis Draco by tearing open its throat.
After the animals were released, Duke followed the team back to the transport and refused to remain behind.
He joined the team by choice.
Appearance
Duke is an enormous black Cane Corso with a broad chest, powerful shoulders, and a heavy, muscular build.
His short coat carries scars from surviving the days following Tuesday. One side of his muzzle bears visible marks from previous fights.
Despite his intimidating appearance, Duke is intelligent, observant, and surprisingly expressive.
He sometimes appears to smile.
Personality
Duke is:
- Loyal
- Protective
- Fearless
- Intelligent
- Independent
- Territorial
- Patient
- Highly observant
Duke does not obey simply because someone gives him an order. He chooses the people he trusts.
Once Duke accepts someone as part of his group, he protects them as part of his pack.
Unique Skill
Shark Bite
Duke possesses extraordinary bite strength and instinctively identifies vulnerable areas in an enemy’s defenses.
When Duke successfully bites a target, his jaws lock with increased force. The longer he maintains his grip, the more difficult it becomes for the target to escape.
Effects:
- Increased bite damage
- Improved armor penetration
- Increased grip strength
- Reduced chance that an enemy can break free
- Increased damage against exposed joints, limbs, throats, and other vulnerable areas
When protecting a member of his pack, Shark Bite becomes significantly more powerful.
Duke does not release until:
- The threat is dead.
- The threat can no longer fight.
- Duke chooses to release it.
Combat Style
Duke fights through speed, weight, instinct, and overwhelming physical force.
He does not attack randomly. He observes movement, waits for an opening, and targets vulnerable areas.
Preferred targets include:
- Throat
- Neck
- Limbs
- Exposed joints
Duke uses his body weight to knock enemies off balance before securing a bite.
Against larger creatures, he attacks from the side and attempts to disable movement.
Against enemies threatening the team, Duke places himself between the threat and the person he is protecting.
Traits
Pack Guardian
Duke instinctively recognizes threats directed toward members of his group.
Predator’s Instinct
Duke detects movement, unfamiliar scents, hidden creatures, and approaching danger before most humans.
Unyielding Grip
Once Duke secures a bite, removing him becomes extremely difficult.
Good Boy
Classification confirmed.
Relationships
Joker
Joker was the first person Duke followed after leaving the shelter and understands him better than expected because he worked at a pet store when he was younger.
Duke trusts him, though their closer companionship remains a future development. In the current manuscript, Gabriel is Duke’s primary human companion.
Clive
Clive treats Duke as another member of the team and attempts to provide structure when Joker encourages questionable behavior.
Duke generally respects him.
Darius
Darius respects Duke’s strength and willingness to protect others.
Duke recognizes Darius as another defensive member of the pack.
T
T did not approve Duke’s recruitment.
Duke recruited himself.
T eventually accepted the situation because removing a Level 9 Cane Corso from the transport appeared unnecessary and potentially difficult.
Gabriel
Gabriel is currently Duke’s closest human companion and the nearest thing he has to a handler. Duke sleeps near him, follows his direction, seeks him out after combat, and remains close when either of them is injured.
Duke also appears to sense that Gabriel is changing before Gabriel fully understands it himself. Their bond continues to deepen.
